I use a hard arkansas stone on the face of the hammer to smooth it. And it should not be a surprise that RWS caps fit on original nipples.Stack all that over FFFG black powder. Start your charges around 45-50 grains of powder. Increase the charge 5 grains at a time until you find what the rifle likes. You indeed have a Mowrey rifle, which were produced for a while in Olney, Texas. They are a copy of the Allen & Thurber rifles of the 1850's and 1860's, which were produced in Worcester, Massachusetts. This can cut the groove deeper and is advanced to the next groove. Then a paper shim is placed under the cutter and the process is repeated till the grooves are deepened to your goal. A slow and labor intensive job but rather simple.The rifled barrel will spin the shot. When the shot leaves the muzzle it will open the pattern at very close range. The shot will most likely be damaged to add to poor shooting. Even in a smooth bore getting a good pattern can be a difficult. There are many variables to consider when working up a load for any muzzleloading rifle. Bore size, rare of twist, patching material for round ball, powder type, lube for your bullet/patches. all of these things will affect accuracy and the type of powder you use and the best charge to use.Put the breech in a bucket of water. Add some soap to aid cleaning especially if you use an oil or greasy patch lubricant. There is a screw in the side of the drum that can be removed to do the flash channel cleaning suggested by @tenngun. I'm not going to improve on the rest of tenngun's suggestions.Jun 6, 2008. #11. There's almost as many different types of patchbox release mechanisms as their are schools of longrifles. Some builders that try to recreate specific longrifles as exactly as possible try to use the same type of mechanism as the original rifle they are copying, even if the mechanism is hidden.I have bent a couple by doing the following; Remove the hammer, place the hole area in a vise, heat the neck area to red with torch, bend as needed, then allow to cool before removing from the vise. With a .40 all shots need to be at the head/neck area even with very light loads. Mid-body hits might be okay, you'll just have to see.
